The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide: What You and Your Family Need to Know by David J. Miklowitz, Ph.D.-This book is highly recommended for those in their late teens to adults with bipolar disorder or the people who love them. The information is easy to read, understandable, and well researched. Acceptance of the diagnosis and medication is discussed as well as information on non-medical interventions for staying healthy. There is a lot of good information on management strategies, encouraging therapy and family participation. It stresses the need for understanding your illness, developing a support system, staying on a schedule, and ways to keep track of what effects life has on you. There are some great forms and questionnaires throughout the book that can be very helpful. - scifinut

 

 

Why Your Depression Isn't Getting Better: The Epidemic of Undiagnosed Bipolar Disorders by Michael Bartos MD– An excellent look at the misdiagnosis and under-diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, especially in women.

 

 

 

 

I'm Not Sick I Don't Need Help by Xavier Amador MD- -When a person with a brain disorder is in denial or doesn't recognize they are ill it impacts the whole family. Excellent advice for surviving and even helping your loved one get the treatment the need.

 

 

 

How to Survive When They Are Depressed by Anne Sheffield- Another excellent book on how to cope until your loved one gets the treatment the need. 

 

 

 

 

Mind Over Mood by Dennis Greenberger, Christine Padesky - A manual that can be used with the help of a therapist or on your own to learn the premises and practice of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
