First Visit to a Psychiatrist

That first visit to a psychiatrist, or to a new doctor can be and exciting and even scary time. It helps to go prepared so you can make the most out of the time spent in the appointment. Here is a list of suggested items you can take to help with the process:

  • A list of all meds tried and their reactions

  • Mood charts for the last couple of months and any extra notes on moods

  • Current meds

  • Family history of mental illness and substance abuse

  • Family history sheet on any treatment that those family members have had that worked or didn't work. For example: if Aunt Sally did great on Lithium, often times med response runs in families too

  • All the papers the psychiatrist's office sends to fill out

  • A page of questions to ask the doctor, and a pen to write notes so you don't forget the answers.

  • A copy of treatment guidelines with areas you wish to discuss highlighted. Even if you don't get to go through them with the doc, this will show you are educated on Ped BP~ A very good thing indeed.

  • Bring in your concerns about other children as well. The doc may not be seeing them, but knowing that sibs have issues can be a factor as well.
