Ask the Doctor

Dr. Fristad,

Can you please explain how to tell when my 13yo son is having symptoms or just acting his age?

Thank You,

Jenna

You raise a really important point.  Some behavior is mood-related, some is being a teen.  If your child has been quite impaired with symptoms, it is also likely that when well, he has some “growing up” to do above and beyond standard development, as his development was “put on hold” for some time.  If at all possible, volunteer at your child’s school or at an activity in which he participates.  Observing from a distance will give you a better sense of what is typical for others his age in various settings.  Another option is to develop your network of other parents from his grade, and check out your observations against those of the group (always best to listen first, then contribute).
